The Refugee Education Council (REC)

The REC was established in 2021 through consultations with Canadian civil society and is hosted by World Vision Canada. Created in collaboration with the Canadian International Education Policy Working Group (CIEPWG) and aligned with the Government of Canada’s Together for Learning campaign, the REC brings together youth advocates, community leaders, teachers, and parents from around the world.

Voices of The REC

“Education is vital in realizing one’s own agency despite the difficult circumstances and it equips displaced children and youth with skills required to rebuild their own lives and to transform their communities.”

“The experience of forcible displacement is inherently traumatic. There can be high levels of stress during displacement, asylum-seeking, and integration into host communities. Improving emotional well-being and creating supportive learning environments can lead to better academic performance and learning outcomes.”

“My biggest hurdle to accessing or completing my education was navigating the challenges of accessing a valid travel document, including limited resources, unstable environments, and the emotional toll of adapting to new communities. Education is vital in realizing one’s own agency despite the difficult circumstances and it equips displaced children and youth with skills required to rebuild their own lives and to transform their communities.”
